Restoring Health Through Root Cause Medicine
A virtual Physician Assistant practice serving the California Central Valley and the state of California.
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine is a patient centered approach to health care, seeking to understand how the the influences of our environment, genetics, mind, body and spirit are contributing to poor health. Functional medicine practitioners use detailed histories and specialized testing of the GI tract, hormones and blood work to understand how body systems are affecting each other. Our goal is to bring the body back into balance and restore optimal health with an individualized approach to each patient. Our modalities are heavily focused on diet, emotional and spiritual well being, herbal based supplement protocols and pharmaceuticals when necessary. We seek not just the absence of disease, but the presence of a full, vital life.
Who can benefit from Functional Medicine?
Anyone! If you are not feeling your best, you stand to benefit from functional medicine. When presented with symptoms, a functional medicine practitioner seeks to understand the “why?”’ and address the root cause of your symptoms. Some common conditions we work with are, fatigue, brain fog, low energy, low libido, weight gain, metabolic disease, autoimmune issues, GI upset or irregularity, hormone imbalances, behavior issues, perimenopause and fertility. Our bodies are intricately connected systems with a deep tie between the mind, body and spirit. We seek to use integrative modalities including herbal based supplements and treatments, mind-body medicine practices and pharmacologics when needed to help your body toward restoration and healing. (Please note, we are not seeing children at this time).
What to expect…
In depth health history intake. We work with you to understand your story and how you got to this place in your health journey. This visit is generally 55 minutes long. After this visit we formulate a plan that often includes comprehensive functional medicine testing depending on need.
After testing is complete we meet to review your lab findings. This visit is 85 minutes long. We review findings, order any other labs that may be needed and begin to formulate a treatment plan and recommendations. You generally will start initial treatments and lifestyle changes following this visit.
Follow up and continued care. These visits are designed to answer any questions, help you maintain your goals, make changes to treatments as necessary, help you transition into further stages of treatment (medication and supplements as necessary), and be supportive along your restorative health journey. These visits are generally 25 minutes in length, but maybe 55 minutes depending on the individual need.
Investment
We believe in straight forward pricing, and seek to keep your expenses as low as possible while providing you excellent care. We currently do not bill insurance however we will gladly order any labs we can to Quest or Labcorp which may be eligible for insurance coverage. Please note, this generally excludes specialized functional medicine labs. The specialty labs and any labs we cannot order through Quest go through a company called Rupa health. Rupa Health provides reasonable cash pay options for labs. We are also happy to provide you with a “super bill “ which is a receipt of sorts that you can submit to insurance for possible reimbursement. (Reimbursement varies with each insurance plan, please check with your insurance company regarding reimbursement before beginning treatment. We cannot guarantee reimbursement.) Finally, many HSA plans will cover functional medicine care as well as the testing. Please check with your HSA provider for individual coverage.
Time based pricing for visits:
55 minute visit: $180
85 minute visit: $270
25 minute visit: $90
6 visit package including 55 minute initial visit, 85 minute results review and 4 follow up visits at 25 minutes: $760 ($50 savings on 6 visits to be used within 1 year of purchase.)
Labs:
We can order many labs through quest or Labcorp depending on patient insurance.
Specialized functional medicine labs vary in price, but generally range from $150-$450 per test for commonly used orders.
These labs are billed directly with the lab order service, Rupa Health, not through Still Waters and are in addition to the visit costs.
Supplements and medications:
We seek to recommend the highest quality supplements at the best prices. Everyone’s recommendations will be highly individualized.
We recommend protocols through Fullscript Pharmacy, you purchase directly through them and the supplements are shipped to your home. This set up allows us to offer you a 25% discount on supplements. (We do get a small percentage on supplement orders on these platforms which helps support operating costs. You do not have to order through these platforms if your prefer to order the recommended supplement and brand elsewhere).

Frequently Asked Questions:
Why the name Still Waters?: Psalm 23 Says “He leads me beside still waters, He restores my soul”. Jesus alone is the restorer of our souls and our bodies. The process of illness is often exhausting for our souls, and our whole self needs restoration. It’s with this heart in mind that I started Still Waters.
What is your training?: I completed my BS in Kinesiology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (2007), my PA certification and Master’s degree in Public Health from U.C. Davis (2011) and practitioner training and certification at the Functional Medicine Academy (2025). I am currently working toward certification with the Institute of Functional Medicine as I launch my practice.
What sort of testing is commonly ordered?: Each patient is unique! We will run testing based off your symptoms and story. Often this includes stool testing and blood work and sometimes hormone testing as well.
Will you become my primary care provider?: Nope! We hope all patients maintain a close relationship with their primary doctor. We are not treating you for your respiratory infection or skin condition in the way a traditional primary care provider does. We hope those infections become less frequent after we work together to heal your body systems, but you still need your care team and we fully support your doctors. In addition, if you are seeing any specialists, we require you to continue to see them. We will not stop any medications that another doctor has started. Often as you begin to heal, you may be able to stop medications, in which case we would have you see your doctor and we would be in communication with them as well to stop the medication. We believe team work is the best way to benefit each patient.
Will I lose weight?: If that is one one of your goals, we expect that you will! We use food first as medicine and also work to heal the gut and bring hormones back in balance. Often this results in weight loss naturally. We also can help patients with plans designed for weight loss.
How long does treatment take?: Again, this is totally individual! Some patients will require several steps in their journey which can take 6 months to a year or more depending on the condition and the chronicity. Some people may feel much better after a couple of months! This all depends on what your root cause issue is.
